Archery has remained a popular hobby for young adults and kids since a long time. I am yet to meet a kid who wouldn’t love to shoot a bow and arrow! This is a simple guide on choosing the right bow for kids who wish t learn¬†archery.
But which bow is the right one for your kid? There are a lot of choices, and this is something you want to get right. How good your kid can get with a bow and arrows largely depends on choosing the right bow for them.
So here is a simple guide to know which bow is suitable for your child along with recommendations.
A simple but good way to know is by the kid’s weight and age:
6 to 10 Years Old:
An average child within this age group might be between 15 – 30 kilos. It’s a good idea to stick with a lower poundage bow for this age group, you do not want to overwhelm them with too much. The ideal bow would be 10 lbs Recurve bow for kids this age.
This Apex 10 lbs Kids bow comes with everything your archer needs to get a head start into Archery. It can be used by either left-handed or right-handed kids.
It comes with an Arm Guard, a Side Quiver, a Finger Tab, 2 Fibreglass arrows and a cardboard target to top it off.
RECOMMENDED ARROWS: 26″ Fibreglass
9 -11 Years Old:
The¬†average¬†weight of a kid it this age group could be 27 kgs to 36 kgs. Now your kid is probably capable of pulling back a bow that’s a bit harder. Now he/she also has more choice as to what they want. Now they can choose either a recurve bow (which is a little bit easier to pull back than a compound bow), or a compound bow. They can either choose:
1. 10-12 lbs Camo Compound bow
2. 15 Lbs Recuve bow
The fist option is for kids who might want a toy that is and look cooler. It comes is a great Camo pattern, it also has a 1-pin aiming device for precise shots. We’ve found that kids who show signs of interest in hunting later on usually go for this bow. First, it’s a compound bow, so they’ll be familiar with this bow type from early age. Second, the aiming device gives them practice for more complex bow sights and aiming devices when they grow older. ¬†It’s an all round great fun bow, which we know even their mum’s love using to have a go.
The second option is the 15 lbs Recurve Bow. It’s an up from the first red recurve bow above. If you kid mainly just wants to do target practice and get better at that, this is a good choice for them.
Both bows come with an Arm Guard, a Side Quiver, a Finger Tab and 2 Fibreglass arrows.
RECOMMENDED ARROWS: 26″ – 28″ Fibreglass
9 – 12 Years old:
For kids in this age group, or even kids from a younger age but of above average strength, you don’t have to look past the 21 lbs Recurve or Compound Bow. Now the best thing about these bows is they are adjustable from 17 lbs to 21 lbs. You you can lower the poundage for your kid or go higher depending on what they need.
You can choose from a  21lbs Recurve bow (only Camo available) or a 21 lbs Compound, which comes in both Black and Camo.
1. 21 lbs Camo Compound
2. 21 lbs Black Compound
3. 21 Lbs Recuve Camo Bow
All these bows are slightly more upgraded than the previous bows. They all come with Aiming device which is better than the ones found in 10 lbs Camo bows. And, they now have a major upgrade for their Quiver as well, which is almost the same as a Quiver designed for adults.
If your kid is just into target practice, they may wish to stick with a Recurve, or they could also choose a compound bow.
RECOMMENDED ARROWS: 26″ – 28″ Fibreglass
All bows come with an Arm Guard, a Side Quiver, a Finger Tab and 2 Fibreglass arrows.
11 Р14 Years Old: Again, depending on the strength and body type of your kid, your kid maybe able to use the bows in this category well before  they are 11.
They can choose from either a Black 29 lb Compound bow or a Camo one. Now they have all the benefits that come with 21 lbs bows, only these are adjustable from 23 to 29 lbs. That is a lot of difference in poundage. And also one of the best Junior bows available for this reason.
To top that, 29 lbs bows also have another major advantage over the previous bows. It has DACRON Strings from the US, the type string that is used in good quality adult bows.
Perhaps this is the reason why it is our best selling junior bow as well.
RECOMMENDED ARROWS: 30″ Fibreglass
So there you have it. Hope you found this useful in deciding what to get for your kid.
And remember, always make sure your kids practice archery under adult supervision. Specially so at the beginning.
